New Years Plumbing Resolutions

Incorporate These Resolutions for a Better Plumbing System in 2015

1. Stop Wasting Water

  • According to the EPA, leaks account for an average of 10,000 gallons of water wasted in the home every year—enough to fill a backyard swimming pool.
  • EPA studies have also found that 10% of homes have leaks that waste more than 90 gallons per day, or almost 33,000 gallons a year.

Resolve to:

  • Check all faucets and showerheads for leaks and call your favorite plumbing company to fix them. One drip per second can waste more than 2,000 gallons per year—enough to flush a toilet 1,300 times!
  • Replace very old faucets and showerheads with low-flow models.
  • Fix any toilets that run constantly—this could waste up to 200 gallons of water every day. Replace any ancient toilets with low-flow models using no more than 1.6 gallons per flush.

2. Address Inefficient Water Heating

  • Water heating can absorb as much as 25% of your home’s energy budget.

Resolve to:

  • Stop wasting energy with inefficient water heating equipment.
  • Ask your plumber to calculate whether your water heating equipment is the right size for your household and lifestyle.
  • Consider whether one or more “on-demand” tankless water heaters are a reasonable option for your home.

3. Solve Low Water Pressure Issues

Resolve to:

  • Stop putting up with lousy water pressure in your showers.
  • Ask your plumber to investigate the cause and provide solutions to turn trickles into cleansing flows.

4. Help the Elderly

Resolve to:

  • Install grab bars, levered faucets, and any other accommodations needed to avoid injury and inconvenience for elderly loved ones in your household.

5. Sign Up for Service Agreements

Resolve to:

  • Stop reacting to plumbing emergencies.
  • Take a preventive approach by signing up for a plumbing service agreement that assures annual inspection and maintenance of all plumbing systems.
